Not so long time ago, I was so bored that even doomscrolling wasn't doing it to me. I opened YouTube and came across Top of my school, a short musical made by Katherine Lynn-Rose and after remaining shocked by the not-so-very-expected plot twist, I started watching many more short movies.
I don't know if this could interest anyone but sharing is caring right? So here's a list of all the short movies I've watched and liked, with the plot and a hopefully not very long review!
TOP OF MY SCHOOL
Author: Katherine Lynn-Rose
Genre: musical
Plot:
The main character Bree Li is pressured by her parents to be the Top of her school (and honestly I think she also pressures herself).
Her goal is to be accepted into Harvard and to confirm her place in the university she run for student counsil president but someone else is running, Avery Everett. Blinded by her parents pressure she makes sure she will be student counsil president.
Review!
I don't really have anything to say other than: this is fire. I love the comparison made with the Shakespearean novel Macbeth and the melodies are so well done and catchy.
The love story is also well structured! I wouldn't say it's an enemy to lovers, cause I think Bree never even noticed Avery up to that point but it sure does give off those vibes!
Although the ending was not what most wanted, from my point of view it's the one that makes most sense for the story told in these 20 minutes!
DANDELION
Author: Fiona Obertinca
Genre: comedy-drama
Plot:
Margaret is a rebellious queer teen that got kicked out of another foster placement.
That's when she meets Joyce, a social worker who was asked to find her a new placement. While wandering around the town together a very interesting friendship is building up and Margaret finally realizes that she has the possibility to stop running away.
Review!
First thing I want to say is that this short movie educated me on associations like Youth Advocates which I didn't know about before watching this and I'm really glad.
Secondly, what I loved the most is the dynamic between the social worker and the teen and how is represented. Maybe it's only me, but it seems that Margaret isn't the only one slowly opening up but also Joyce is.
RUTINA (Routine)
Author: Adriàn Vivar
Genre: social drama
Plot: This movie tells the story of Mario, a closeted teen that breaks his everyday routine to finally be truthfull to himself and live without fearing others judgement
Review!
Genuinely no notes. It caught my attention from the very first second. I love all the analogies that they incorporated in the short film but i gotta say that my favourite is the taxi/bus one (iykyk).
The ending was kinda unexpected cause of the final plot twist but I loved it, it was so on point and perfect for the movie created!
MEATBALLS
Author: Alexandra Robisnon
Genre: I'd say comedy
Plot: Cece wants to come out to her kind of conservative parents, but it surely doesn't go as planned
REVIEW
It is very but ohmygod I did not expect ANTHING of what happened and I love it in a movie.
